A report by New America Media recently shined a spotlight on the practice of drug testing in countries such as Russia, China, Brazil, Romania and India. Drug companies have found these countries offer a large population of indigent, poor and illiterate people who are willing to participate in drug trials in return for financial compensation. The practice is booming in India, reports Zeina Awad, a health reporter for Al Jazeeera’s “Fault Lines” program.

Cervical cancer vaccine may cause women to skip vital screening

A recent news report says the prevalence and promotion of cervical cancer vaccines Gardasil and Cervarix may cause women who are vaccinated to skip vital medical screening that could save their lives. According to the story in a recent edition of Australia’s News Limited publication, The Advertiser, studies indicate women believe receiving the makes annual Pap smears unnecessary. However, because cervical cancer vaccines only protect against a few of the hundreds of types of (HPV), Pap smears are still a very important part of being protected against cervical cancer.

France, UK cracking down on advertising for HPV vaccines

Government health agencies in France and the United Kingdom are cracking down on the manufacturers of HPV vaccines Gardasil and Cervarix, saying the companies are falsely advertising their products. According to a report in the American Chronicle, watchdog organization SANE VAX has been following the investigation of problems with the advertisements, which have resulted in the ads being banned in France and removed in the UK and India.

Malaysian government set to vaccinate girls with Gardasil

According to the column, the country’s Ministry of Health (MOH) will spend RM 150 million annually for the vaccinations, which will affect about 300,000 girls. Idris warns the is “unnecessary, unscientific and unsafe.”
